Connect a ticket printer

Print your tickets on an 80 mm printer: RawBT on an Android tablet, QZ Tray on a computer, or the browser's print box as a fallback when nothing else works.

A thermal printer prints your tickets, and your kitchen dockets if you want them. A browser cannot talk to a printer on its own: depending on the device your till runs on, a small free program makes the link.

What you need to install

  • On an Android tablet: the RawBT app, free, from the Play Store. Printer on USB, Bluetooth or the network.
  • On a Windows, Mac or Linux computer: the QZ Tray program, free, plus the printer's driver if it is on USB.
  • On an iPad or iPhone: nothing, but printing is limited. Apple lets no app connect a web page to a ticket printer, so the ticket goes through the print box (AirPrint). For a ticket that prints on its own, use an Android tablet or a computer.

1Open Printers, on the till

The printer is set up on the till itself, not in the back office. Open the till's ☰ menu, then Printers: this entry only appears to staff allowed to set up the till, the Owner and the Manager out of the box. With no printer saved yet, the guide starts on its own; otherwise, tap Add a printer.

2On an Android tablet

The till asks one question: How is your printer connected? Tap USB cable, Bluetooth or Network cable or Wi-Fi, then follow the screens: install RawBT (Open the Play Store), plug in or pair the printer, select it in RawBT's settings.

For a printer plugged into the router, note its address: switch it off, switch it back on while holding its FEED button, and a ticket prints with an "IP Address" line. The tablet must be on the same network.

3On a computer

If QZ Tray is missing, the till tells you: tap Download QZ Tray, install it, then It is installed, search. If Chrome asks for access to apps on this device, allow it. Then pick your printer from the list; if it is plugged into the router, tap It is plugged into the router and type its address, such as 192.168.1.50.

When printing, QZ Tray asks for your consent: click "Allow". Its window sometimes hides behind the browser.

Tap Print the test ticket, then answer Did the ticket come out?

  • Yes, it came out: the printer is saved. A manager's PIN may be asked for at this point.
  • No, nothing came out: one check per screen, the most common cause first.
  • Yes, but the line of digits is split in two: it is a 58 mm roll; the till adjusts and sends a new ticket.

As a fallback: the browser's print box

Set it up by hand offers the Browser (fallback) type: the print box opens for every ticket, and you set the paper to 80 mm there. On a computer, a sale that QZ Tray cannot print also goes through that box, so no ticket is lost.

Tip — A cash drawer plugs into the receipt printer with its small cable. It opens by itself on every cash sale, as the receipt prints. Only the browser's print box cannot open it.

Tip — From the second printer on, the till asks what it is for: Customer receipts, Kitchen dockets, Bar dockets. A printer in the kitchen, on another tablet, is added from the kitchen screen.

Tip — Stuck? I can't get it to work sends a support request with what the till has detected. The answer arrives in your back office, under Support.
